IS CARICO COFFEE ORGANIC?
Our farmers live at 1,500 to 2,200 metres altitude and the journey from the main town (where goods are imported from all over the country and abroad) to the nearest farms is over 2 hours. The furthest cooperative is a 3-hour drive and 6 kilometre walk during the dry season. Add at least another hour during the rainy (growing) season. Fertilisers and pesticides are expensive, so farmers use enhanced natural techniques of mulching, dried dung and intercropping to replenish soil quality as well as agroforestry shade to increase the biodiversity within farms which also improves soil quality and reduces the need for pesticides. For exposed farms, natural soaps in open containers are used as insect traps. We survey the farms and cooperative movement creates community support. Our coffee is not certified organic, but it is. Economics and ecology dictate the output.
IS CARICO COFFEE FAIR TRADE?
We pay higher than the other buyers. To date, we have not discounted our investments, whether social, educational, environmental or other from the price we pay, and we intend to keep doing this.

In January 2019, Reuters reported: ‚A Ugandan company has started using blockchain, the technology behind virtual currency Bitcoin, to certify shipments of coffee to try to meet growing demand from consumers for more information about where products have come from.‘
CARICO was the first company globally to use blockchain technology, led with one goal: consumers should know where their coffee actually comes from - in all aspects.

WHAT IS MOUNT ELGON LIKE TODAY AND HOW WILL THIS CHANGE?
In 2021, there was ‘only’ one major landslide. No lives were lost, however, 43 of our farmers and their families were displaced. Between 1800 and 2000, there were 13 landslides with 134 lives lost. Schools were shut from March 2020 to January 2022. The best primary school results were in the bottom 10% of the country. The same is true for secondary school results.
Between 1190 and 2015, over 3,000 hectares of tropical high forest was lost, and the proportion described as normal also fell from 70.3% to 16.2%. Communities with no access to energy sources rely on firewood and charcoal for fuel.
